Sumac Berries
Water
Sweetner (sugar, honey or agave nectar)
To prepare sumac drink, start with one large cluster of sumac, which is sufficient for 2 cups of water. First, rinse the sumac in cool water. Gently rub the berries between the palms of your hands to shell them off, being careful not to crush the berries themselves, but only the spines.
Next, place the shelled berries into the 2 cups of water. Crush the berries lightly in the water, and let the mixture soak for a few hours or overnight. The longer you let it soak, the more flavorful the drink will become.
After soaking, strain the mixture through cheesecloth. Finally, sweeten your sumac-ade to taste using your choice of sugar, honey, or agave nectar. You can enjoy it chilled or over ice.
To make a tea version, place the berries in a large pot. Cover the berries with water and simmer for 20 minutes to an hour before mashing them. Strain using cheesecloth or coffee filters. Add sweetener and enjoy.
I have seen some people use maple syrup to sweeten.
Sumac may help strengthen the body against cardiovascular conditions, reduce inflammation, and alleviate the severity of varicose veins and hemorrhoids. It may also provide relief for rheumatic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Additionally, sumac can assist in drying out sinuses that are affected by colds, allergies, or sinus infections.
